Ever since we began making shave soap we decided to search for a stock American made shave brushes, which we buy from a company in New York. Shave brushes come in a variety of different types of bristle, each having unique qualities. Of course as the bristles get softer the price goes up. but here is a quick primer on shave brushes:
Boar Bristle – The boar bristles are a stiff blond 2″ knot integrated into a wood handle. Boar is the starter brush and the stiffest of the bristles used in shaving. Because the bristles are stiff its quite easy to work up a big lather however it should be in the bowl, then the lather applied gently to the face because the stiff bristles cab be irritating.
Synthetic – Synthetic is the best alternative to badger or boar, and a go to for vegans. The knot of bristles is known as a tuxedo knot. The bristles are ultra soft and allow you to create rich lather on your skin. The brush dries the quickest of any of the brushes we carry so that makes it idea for travel as well as home.
Black Badger – This is the starter of the badger brushes, featuring bristles that are pure black. The bristles are very soft yet they are considered the stiffest of the badger bristles. Black badger allows you to work a rich lather on your skin.
Pure Badger – This brush will include black as well as partially gray bristles and is not as coarse as the black badger. This is the next step up in quality and softness, allowing a luxurious lather.
Silver tip Badger- This is the top of the line on badger bristles, featuring the softest and most dense bristle head which allows more water to be held in the bristles to generate the most lather. This brush is considered a lifetime purchase.
We carry a good selection of these types of brushes, and the cool thing is they come with a black acrylic stand that allows the brush to dry out with water dripping down from the brush. That s really important to prevent the bristle knot from loosening from the handle.
