Do you make resolutions?

Happy New Year! Interesting that as a society we begin to reflect on our lives as the old year slips away, and a new year is filled with promise. Yes, I have to admit I spend reflective time, much of which is trying to refine life, eliminate the noise and the wasteful things that took me off course. And for our business it is a time to look at the year that was, and think about how to make it better.

But resolutions?

No, I don’t make resolutions because they don’t work. Best intentions just don’t have the strength to carry through resolutions until they are muscle memory. To be honest with you I have gone that route – with thoughts like “this year i will loose 20 pounds”, or “I will put aside x dollars each week to save for …” Somewhere in early February that well planned diet fell apart when we ordered a big pizza heaping with calories…. and somewhere in march we had a financial need and used the dollars saved for a different purpose. I realized there needed to be a better way to start the year.

  1. Reflect on the past – I take a legal pad and divide it into 2 columns – Pros and Cons and list the highlights and lowlights.
  2. Plan for the new year – another legal pad page that i brainstorm what i would like to see happen this new year.
  3. Review those lists, take a deep breath, say a prayer and begin organizing in a new planner.

No resolutions – just honest review and honest intentions. I have followed this process for the last 6 years and it works for me.
