Understanding Frankincense: Health and Skincare Advantages

One of the best selling soaps we make is made with Frankincense. But what is it and what is frankincense good for?

Frankincense, a resin from Boswellia trees, offers powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, and potential anti-tumor properties, often used to treat chronic pain, asthma, and skin conditions. It is widely used in aromatherapy for relaxation, and topically to improve skin health. While generally safe, it can cause skin sensitivity and requires dilution.

Health and Therapeutic Benefits

  • Anti-inflammatory & Chronic Pain: Contains boswellic acid that help reduce joint inflammation and improve mobility in conditions like osteoarthritis.
  • Respiratory Health: Inhalation can help with bronchitis and sinusitis.
  • Immune System Support: Known to act as an analgesic and antibacterial agent.
  • Potential Cancer Support: Research indicates boswellic acids may inhibit cancer cell proliferation (leukemia, glioblastoma) and encourage apoptosis (programmed cell death).
  • Brain Function: May improve memory and learning. (aroma therapy)

Skincare Benefits

  • Anti-Aging: Used in creams and oils to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.

It features a bright, citrusy (lemon) sparkle paired with notes of spicy pine, resin, and a subtle smokiness. It is often described as uplifting, sacred, and calming, similar to rosemary or pine sap. Myrrh has a distinct, complex aroma often described as warm, balsamic, woody, and slightly bitter with a resinous, earthy, and sweet depth. Commonly used in incense, it emits a smoky, ancient, and slightly medicinal scent that can also resemble notes of pine, licorice, or nutmeg. Together the aroma is warm, earthy and fresh.
