Discover Babassu Oil: The Amazonian Skincare Secret
As we research ingredients for our soap formulas we run into oils we never heard of until that moment. Babassu oil is a great example. We add it to several formulas of our soap, and we thought you might be interested in knowing more about it.
Babassu oil comes from the seeds of the Babassu palm (Attalea speciosa or Orbignya phalerata), a tree native to the Amazon rainforest, particularly prevalent in Brazil, Bolivia, and surrounding areas. The oil is extracted from the kernels found inside the hard, coconut-like fruits of the palm, often collected by local communities, and is known for its similar properties to coconut oil, used widely in cosmetics, soaps, and food.
Babassu oil is a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil from the Amazon’s Babassu palm, prized for skincare and haircare due to its fatty acids (like lauric acid) and antioxidants, providing deep moisture, soothing irritation (eczema, psoriasis), and conditioning hair without greasiness, often used as a coconut oil substitute in lotions, soaps, and serums. It’s solid at room temp but melts on skin, leaving a smooth finish, and is used for dry skin, chapped lips, frizzy hair, and inflammation.
