I practice the silk painting style known as Serti method, which involves drawing outlines on white silk which will be painted. The outlines are drawn with a polymer known as gutta resist, and the color of the resist remains a permanent part of the end design.
The silk is placed on top of the design on the table, held down with masking tape. Then the resist is added (tracing the design) to the white silk. Here is a bit of video of this process:




When the design is completely applied to the silk the scarf is stretched on a frame, and color is added. From left to right we see the completely drawn design, adding gold for the bullseye centers of these peacock feathers is added, then a turquoise , then a deep azure blue. The process continues one color at a time until it is completed.
Once fully painted the silk is taken off the frame, rolled in newsprint, and placed in a steamer for an hour to permanently set the colors, and fuse the resist to the silk permanently.
