Commissioned Silk Portraits: Capture Your Pet’s Essence
I just thought it would be fun to share several of my recently completed portrait projects. It starts with a digital photo of the animal. I create an outline sketch to use as a guideline to sketch the outline onto silk using gutta resist. Once that’s dry the piece of silk is placed on a frame made of pvc and paint is applied. Silk is unique in that a small drop of paint spreads as far as it can on the surface of silk because of capillary action. Those outlines are barriers that stop the paint from flowing beyond. But silk painting is a lot like watercolor. It takes layers, allowing the silk to dry, and then adding new details.
Once the silk is painted it needs to be ironed to set the color and fuse the resist to the silk with heat. Then selecting a cotton material for the back, stitching it up, stuffing it and it is done.
