My affinity for Art Noveau

We each have unique likes and dislikes. Specific colors, shapes and designs. Since I first discovered Art Noveau as a kid it was love at first sight. Perhaps it was those swirling lines, or the amazing color palate. As a silk painted it is design inspiration for a lifetime.

Like so many people I spend a lot of effort researching designs. And pinterest is one of my go to locations for finding ideas. Last year i came across posts of old French Botanical posters – each poster featured 2 different flowers and some sort of a bug. Somewhere in the design was the names of these flowers, in French of course. I saved a number of the designs, and was able to copy 4 of them onto silk last year. As we approach the outdoor art fair season my plan is to execute more of the designs onto silk.

Shown in the photos are 4 of these posters:

  • English Roses and Iris – deep pink english roses and vibrant deep purple iris against a background in various shades of blues. There are always at least one insect in the pattern. In this case dragon flies in gold are circling the large iris.
  • Nasturtiums and Lily of the Valley with Naturtium in bright orange, and deep green leaves of lily of the valley feature pops of white flowers. The insect is a fat bee flying onto the flowers.
  • Magnolia and Red C;pver feature faintly pink magnolia flowers and dusty red clover heads with shades of blue background and a band of orange.
  • Bleeding hearts and Wallflowers feature rich sprays of pink bleeding heart stalks, and wall flowers in golden yellow. I left the big ugly black spider off this design.

My photography needs improvement – because the colors are so much more vibrant in person. These will be up on the website shortly.
